ADD thought – Exactly when was and where is ground zero for the marks taking over wrestling?

XXXVIII.

I landed in Nashville after another two day flying experience to join the Mike Dano circus and jumped in a rental car with Mike Durham. Folks knew him later as Johnny Grunge of Public Enemy. I always knew him as Mike or Big D. We drove to the arena and saw a nice new hand written at the box office sign stating the wrestling show had been cancelled. When we finally found Dano, we found out the entire tour was over before it ever started. Dano had lined up some serious money sponsor with connections to venues everywhere. And Dano was going across the nation running major venues in larger cities with no advance advertising past posters hanging in windows in 1991. The advance sales across the country showed just how dead this tour was before it ever started.

I was able to land a show of two with the WWF, but all hell was breaking loose with the sex scandals and the drug trial was on the horizon, so those wagons were slowly circling. If that wasn’t bad enough, someone named von Erich or Adams was getting arrested on a regular basis and killing off the small towns in Texas in the process. South Texas had never been a major hub for independent wrestling and the ignorance and addictions of one small group of wrestling superstars was killing off anything worthwhile in North Texas. I was actually doing odd jobs and looking at going back to college when I realized I was in a corner with two options. I could suffer through knowing I would eventually lose the marriage I lost anyway or I could head to the last territory remaining. I flew to Puerto Rico a few weeks later.

Solomon Grundy had been in South Africa with me on the tour from hell. Once he made his way home, Grundy took Carlos Colon up on a standing offer and went to Puerto Rico. According to Solomon, my name came up in a discussion one day and Carlos sent word I was welcome anytime. After what had happened to Bruiser Brody I had no interest in working Puerto Rico again. I also had no interest in staying broke and near destitute. After deciding that Brody would have chosen to continue feeding his son over taking a stand if the roles were reversed, I made the call and received my starting date from Carlos.

Billy Ray Travis was leaving the island and Carlos wanted me to take his place in a team with Gustavo Mendoza. Billy Ray and Gustavo were in a program with Ricky Santana and Rey Gonzalez in the upper half of the card. I made all my arrangements and headed back to San Juan where my run of ‘good luck’ continued. In our first television match, Gustavo and I did a simple spot with Jose Estrada Jr. where we caught him in a cross body block.
